Sustainable Development

The underlying goal of Town planning is to facilitate Sustainable Development. This is a term that was made famous by the Brundtland Report of 1987 and is defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs” (referenced in Park, 2001). Planners are increasingly aware of this term and its impacts on development plans. Some commentators believe it to be an oxymoron. Counsell (1999) explained that translation of this abstract idea into operational practice gives rise to problems, due both to a lack of understanding about what sustainable development means.

Carbon Footprint

A ‘carbon footprint’ measures the total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by a person, organisation, event or product (Carbon Trust 2010).
